In only their 2nd year of existence, the Blazer Boys bowling team missed qualifying to State by only 15 pins in one of the toughest regionals in Class 5A. With some of the highest scores in the state, Coach Zegers was happy with the way boys performed. “It’s good to know we can compete with the best in state. Yeah, it’s frustrating to miss making State by 15 pins, but I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
After the 2 teams are announced as making it to State, 6 bowlers with the highest series from the teams that didn’t make it still advance for individual competition at Northrock Lanes in Wichita Thursday and Friday. On the boy side, GEHS will be sending 2. With games of 279,269,216 for a 764 series, Chris Martin qualified 2nd all around and is very excited about the chance to bowl with the best in the state. “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since football, and I can’t be more ready.”
Jeff Ragland, who had scores of 236, 279, for a 712 series, qualified 6th all around and is also headed to Wichita. He is excited to bowl in the same center where grew up learning to bowl when he was 2 and in front of friends and family. “This is something I’ve been looking forward to ever since we got a bowling team in Gardner. With people I’ve known all my life going to be there, I’m sure to have a good cheering section.”
On the girl’s side, Audra Barber shot a 584 series which was good enough to send her to Wichita. As the first girl in Gardner history to make it to State, she’s ready to make things happen. “I’m proud to be first and you know I’ll be going to Wichita to win.”
Chris and Jeff will be bowling at 1:00 pm Thursday; Audra will be bowling Friday. Good luck to all of you! We are proud of you!
