The Gardner Edgerton School District announced today the 2010 District Teacher of the Year winners. Jenny Becker, ELL Teacher at Gardner Elementary School, and Brian McGee, Gardner Edgerton High School Communications Art Teacher were named Gardner Edgerton USD 231 District Teacher of the Year winners. These two outstanding teachers will be advancing to the Kansas Teacher of the Year Regional Competition.
Becker has been with the school district for nine years teaching fourth, seventh and eighth grades, and the past three as the ELL teacher at Gardner Elementary.
McGee has been with the district for ten years and has taught Sophomore English, Junior English, Basic English I, Basic English II, Oral Communications, Teen Leadership, and Sports Literature. Brian is also the Head Boys' Track & Field Coach.
Each year the Kansas State Department of Education looks for one outstanding teacher to become its Teacher of the Year, and sponsors a statewide competition. Each school district is given the opportunity to nominate one elementary and one secondary teacher. Once selected as a District Teacher of the Year winner, an extensive application process must be completed to move onto the regional competition.
A regional selection committee is responsible for selecting six semi-finalists, three elementary teachers and three secondary teachers at the regional level. Each regional finalist becomes a state finalist for the Kansas Teacher of the Year.
