The Nike Elementary 4th graders recently took a field trip to the Steamboat Arabia Museum . It was one of those great experiences where education and fun seamlessly merge.

The Steamboat Arabia was a beautiful side wheeler steamboat when it hit a snag in the Missouri River on September 5th, 1856. That 'snag' was a fallen walnut tree which tore a large hole in the Arabia's hull. The ship was just one mile from Parkville, MO. All of the 130 passengers and crew survived, but all of their personal belongings and cargo were lost - lost for 132 years.

Thousands of artifacts from the steamboat and its cargo have been recovered, and are now on display in the Arabia Steamboat Museum at 400 Grand Boulevard in the River Market district of Kansas City, Missouri.
